Morgan reveal the replacement for their popular 3 Wheeler
24th February 2022
We knew it was coming, Morgan's replacement for their iconic 3 Wheeler, and here it is. It will be called the Super 3 and, despite the looks, it is a big departure from the outgoing model in lots of ways.
For a start, gone is the ash frame and instead there is Morgan's first model to utilise a monocoque chassis. Then there are things like the digital dials and the optional navigation, also both firsts for the company. Continuing the radical departure from the old model, the power source now comes from a three cylinder Ford engine replacing the exposed two litre motorcycle V-twin. The torquey feel of the old power plant will give way to a higher revving engine in the new Super 3.
The 1432cc of the Ford engine puts out 118 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 110 lb/ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. These figures are higher than those for the previous engine, which developed 82 bhp at 5,250 rpm and 105 lb/ft at 3,250 rpm. Weight has also grown slightly to 1,400 pounds, so the 0-62 mph (100km/h) time remains similar to the old model at 7 seconds, but the top speed is substantially increased from 115 mph (185 km/h) in the old 3 Wheeler to 130 mph (209 km/h) in the Super 3.
Happily Morgan have retained the popular, you could say ubiquitous, 5-speed Mazda MX-5 transmission which served the outgoing car very well. Wisely, the new monocoque chassis has been designed to take a battery pack for the inevitable future direction of the Super 3.
As with the previous model expect a big choice of personalisation in colour schemes and kit. Prices start from £41,995 and availability is from June.
